A baby shower doesn’t necessarily need a theme but it does help when plotting the invitations, decorations, party favors and even food. A theme will give you direction so plotting is more streamlined and organized. If you are plotting a shower with the mom-to-be’s knowledge, question her about her baby and the baby room décor. If you know whether gender of the baby or how the baby’s room is decorated, you could gain some direction. But, if the baby shower is a surprise, you certainly could use some of the following thoughts.

1. Expecting a Second Child

When you are seeking a baby shower theme for an expectant mom who is expecting baby number two and already has most of the baby paraphernalia already, consider having a “freezer” party. Question all the guests to bring a cooked or baked meal in a disposable container that could be frozen. That way, once the baby is born, the family does not have to stress about dinners. They can just pull a meal out of the freezer, reheat and eat.

2. Have a Diaper Party

Diapers are a hot commodity and one of the most expensive investments for new parents. Consider having a diaper party so that baby will be fully covered bottom-wise for months to come. Raffle off a nice gift at the baby shower in which the raffle “fee” is a package of diapers. It not only takes away the deliberating over a gift but it is fun too. Tailor the games and favors around diapers too.

Stock up on a few baby dolls and have a diaper changing contest. Blindfold each guest and see who can diaper a baby doll the fastest with the winner receiving a prize. Clean cloth diapers could serve as placemats or napkins for each guest table setting.

3. Incorporate Umbrellas for the Shower

Since you are throwing a baby shower, umbrellas are the perfect solution for when it is “raining” babies. Serve non-alcoholic drinks with cute small drink umbrellas. Turn a few colorful umbrellas upside down around the room and show gifts of stuffed animals in them for the baby or even diapers or other small baby gifts. Buy umbrella-shaped baby shower invitations or make your own on the computer.

4. Pretty in Pink for Girls

If the mom-to-be is positive a girl is in store, make a pretty in pink baby shower theme. With pink, virtually anything goes. You could serve pink food such as cake or cookies with pink icing and pink lemonade. Decorate the area with pink balloons, streamers, table confetti or even flowers. Fill clean, used baby food jars with pink gumdrops or jelly beans and nestle tealight candles in them for decorations.

5. Sail Away for Boys

Boats are always a cute baby shower theme for boys. Nautical options abound for decorations such as fishing nets and shells for the tables or even miniature boats floating in a clear bowl filled with sand at the bottom and water on the top. Colorful beach balls could be showed around the room and sailor hats make for cute party favors. Bob for pacifiers for one of the games and look for boat shaped invitations. Serve cookies shaped like sailboats or a cake with an ocean theme. Place a few floating boats in the punch bowl.
